Holiday Break

Hello fellow dino-fans. With the holiday season upon us, we are taking a moment to relax,  and evaluate where we are. Dino Beasts will not be posting any new images until the new year. But don’t worry, there is still 40 pages of cool story that you can read and re-read. Happy Holidays from Ferror!

Real Dino Facts 1 – Lambeosaurus

Dino Beasts might be a fictional comic that takes place on a fictional planet, but the dinosaur characters are based on Earth’s very real dinosaur history. In order to learn some real dinosaur facts, we decided to bring in someone with legit science credentials, Dr. Cory Redman.   Dino Facts Part 1: Lambeosaurus Our main hero, Kumoto, is a hadrodont, which is a fictional species that evolved from the Hadrosauridae family of dinosaurs. In the comic, the hadrodonts’ defining feature is their head crest, which specifically comes from their Lambeosaurus ancestry. In real life, the duck-billed dinosaur family of Hadrosauridae is divided into two subgroups, Lambeosaurinae and Hadrosaurinae, which are distinguished by the presence (Lambeosaurinae) or absence (Hadrosaurinae) of cranial crests and ornamentation and by the shape of the pelvic bones. Lambeosaurus is super cool because of their crazy head crests. In our story, Kumoto’s people view the crests […]

Artist Interview

Today I’m interviewing James Coats, the Artist and creative Visual Architect of Dino Beasts. So, let’s get to it!
 1. What made you want to work on a project like Dino Beasts? And what do you like the most about this story?
When the idea to collaborate on a comic book came about we really discussed several different ideas.  A story based in fantasy and adventure seemed to be the common theme in most of our early ideas, and then it became more about what our interests were and what would we want to read.  We started looking at some of the stories and properties that have heavily influenced us creatively since we were kids, things like He-Man, Dino-Riders, Ninja Turtles, and a slew of other 80’s cartoons and toys.  Dinosaur characters is something that just kept popping up in our discussions.  It seemed like that is the one type of story we kept talking about wanting to read but couldn’t because no one was making good comics with dinosaur characters in them.  There was also a real energy and excitement anytime we started talking about a world with dinosaur people, so it came about naturally when we settled on the Dino Beasts project. […]

Shop Talk 1

As an art nerd I find process post and shop talk extremely interesting, so I’ve decided to make some posts on the behind the scenes workings of our comic in case anyone else might find it informative.   As far as tools I keep it relatively simple.  I like to use a lead holder for my penciling and I switch between using standard HB lead or, as is the case most recently, non-photo blue lead.  I don’t have any real preference right now it is just what do I feel like using on the day. I am pretty good about keeping my pencils light enough that I don’t leave marks once I erase them later, so for me HB lead works just fine.   I like my inks to be rich and black on my original art boards.  You can always darken the line work once it gets into […]
